Review: Grinspoon @ Fortitude Music Hall 16.12.23

Fortitude Music Hall in Brisbane played host this past Saturday night to the evergreen antics of Australia’s favourite musical export, Grinspoon. Along for the ride is Melbourne’s Private Function, and 16 year old Triple J Unearthed High finalist, Ixarus.

The evening opened with feel-good melodies coutesy of Ixaras – an interesting choice, considering the line-up, but the musical talent on display was certainly impressive, and received a warm reception from the gathering crowd.

Private Function fired into their set like they were coming in by cannon; their high-energy stage presence gearing up the crowd with their short-but-mighty back-catalogue. Frontman Chris Penney was considerate enough to launch VB cans into the audience before mooning them, which kind of makes it ok if you think about it.

After an impressive set that undeniably would have stolen the show from any other headliner, Private Function bid farewell, but not before delivering a robust rendition of ABBA’s velvet-pop ditty “SOS” – a feat so well executed it sounded a bit less shit than the original. These kids are alright.

From the moment the curtain dropped, and the opening chords of Anyday Anyhow rang out through the venue, Grinspoon owned the room.

Over the next 90 minutes the band delivered an audibly flawless set, with highlights from both Easy and New Detention (the namesakes for the tour to celebrate their first vinyl run) alongside a string of classics spanning their entire career.

After a solid performance packed with singalongs and smiles, Grinspoon closed the show with the More Than You Are, the anthem that helped define a generation and solidified themselves as mainstays in the Australian music scene when it was released on the 1997 album, Guide To Better Living.

Overall, an impressive experience from a band that continues to deliver at the top of their game after almost 30 years.
